The Linear Narrative - In this project you will create a script for a single storyline film. It should have a beginning, a middle and an end. Below is a list of things to think about when creating your story. Keep it simple and do-able. Consider locations you have access to and people that are available to help. Questions to answer: 1. Brainstorm a series of ideas that can become interesting stories. 2. Write as many as you can think of. Go to the news or daily life for inspiration. Tell a small story not a grand epic tale. 3. Think about conflict. Is it internal? 4. Describe the characters - protagonist, antagonist, 5. what are the goals of each character? 6. what is the conflict? 7. Is there a McGuffin? -
In fiction, a MacGuffin (sometimes McGuffin or maguffin) is a plot device in the form of some goal, desired object, or other motivator that the protagonist pursues, often with little or no narrative explanation. The specific nature of a MacGuffin is typically unimportant to the overall plot.
8. What is the protagonist's obstacle? 9. How does the conflict begin? 10. What is the inciting incident? (The point of no return)? 11. Describe the Obligatory Moment where good and evil face off. 12. How does the climax occur? 13. Is there a deus-ex-machina? 14. Describe the falling action. What pieces have to be put back in place in order to restore the quo achieved or have things changed forever? Will you leave the ending ambiguous?
Writing a Screenplay and Script 1. The Spine - a single sentence summary of the themes and plot. 2. The Treatment - The Summary of Actions and plot. 3. Screen play - the full script with dialogue, blocking, shot suggestions etc. 4. Tentative Production Schedule - make plans early! 5. Location Sheet - electrical, lighting, camera equipment, sound equipment, photos of your locations for reference, permission to shoot if needed.
2 Minute Movie Your team has 120 seconds to wow the audience. Your team must create a proposal for a 2 minute narrative film. Include names and duties of each person in the proposal. Email the proposal to me via google docs to gregorygolda(at)gmail.comThe film should show the same principles we worked with in still photography in a video form. Your movie should have matching cuts, a montage sequence and single camera dialogue. Props, effects, locations, lighting and the other elements of the mise-en-scene are up to you and your team. I need your proposal with in 24 hours so you can get approval and start writing and shooting.
You have 2 weeks to complete this film. The spine, screenplay, script and schedule are due next class. Feb 22.
